Completed, at last
Children's sermon
Object:
A jigsaw puzzle
I brought this puzzle along with me to show you. This is a
really tough one with 3,000 pieces. I put this together once and
it took me a long time. I worked and worked with it and finally
one day I put in the last piece and I said to myself, "It's
completed, at last!"
Have any of you ever put one of these together? (Let them
answer.) If you haven't done a puzzle like this, have you ever
done anything else that took a long time and was very difficult,
but you finally got it done? (Let them answer.)
Well, today is Good Friday. On this day we remember the day
that Jesus suffered and died on the cross. Jesus lived 33 years
and did a lot of really wonderful things. He healed the sick,
raised the dead, and taught people about God. On Good Friday, all
the work that he was sent to do on earth was completed. The last
thing he said as he suffered on the cross that day was, "It is
finished." What do you think he meant by those words? (Let them
answer.) He was saying that it was finally completed. Not just the
pain and suffering on the cross, but everything he had been sent
by God to do as a man on this earth was finished, completed.
Because he finished his work perfectly, you and I will be
going to heaven someday. He paid for all our sins and made that
possible. If he had not finished his work, we would never be able
to go to heaven. That sure is more important than finishing a
puzzle, isn't it? (Let them answer.)
Dear Jesus: We thank you so much for finishing your work here on
earth so that we can all go to heaven. Amen.
