Confessing the name of Jesus
Children's sermon
Object:
a Jeopardy game if available, otherwise none
Good morning! Jesus says that if we are ashamed of him and
his words, he will be ashamed of us. What he means is that we
have to be proud to be Christians and willing to tell people
about Jesus. Are all of you proud to be Christians? Are you all
willing to speak out the name of Jesus in public? (Let them
answer.) Good! I'm glad you feel that way because Jesus wants you
to do that.
Have you ever seen this game on television? (Show the
Jeopardy game and let them answer or just ask if they've seen the
game.) In this game, you are given the answer and you have to
come up with the question. Let's play the game. I will give you
an answer and you tell me the question. Remember you have to give
me the question for the answer I give you. The first answer is,
"He was born in Bethlehem." (Be sure they answer with the
question, "Who is Jesus?) Okay, the second answer is, "He died on
the cross to pay for our sins." (Again, they must answer with the
question, "Who is Jesus?" Continue with as many questions as you
want with the same correct response, "Who is Jesus?")
You all did that very well. You certainly don't have any
trouble speaking the name of Jesus here in church, but what about
other places? Are you proud to be a Christian in all places? Will
you always be glad to use the name of Jesus? (Let them answer.)
That's very good. I hope you will always be willing to speak his
name and never be ashamed of him.
Let's say a prayer now asking Jesus to help us always be
proud that we are Christians who believe in him.
Dear Jesus: We are proud to be people who bear your holy name.
Help us in every way to speak your name to all the people who
have not yet believed in you. Amen.
