"The cost of discipleship"
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: It is very easy for all of us to say
that we are Christians, followers of Christ. Actual discipleship,
however, sometimes requires sacrifice. Our children need to see
that they must be willing to do more than give "lip service" to
Christianity. They must "walk the walk" as well as "talk the
talk."
*Ask the children to name (in their opinion) the worst chore
in their family household. List the chores that are named on a
blackboard. Then go back over the listed chores and ask who
usually does that chore. If somebody else usually does it, ask
them if they would consider doing it because they are disciples
of Jesus. If they already do it, ask them if they might change
their attitude about it if they remember that they are disciples
of Jesus and he has asked us to do even difficult things for
others. The discussion should lead them to see that we need to
sacrifice to be real disciples.
*Bring a book about Christian martyrs and read to them about
martyrs who died for their faith. Spend some time discussing how
true disciples are willing to lay down their life for what they
believe.
Sunday school assembly opening:
*Read verse 27 and ask them to discuss what Jesus means when
he speaks of carrying "the cross." What does it mean to "follow
him?"
