Count your blessings
Children's sermon

a gift you received this Christmas
Good morning, boys and girls. For many of you today is the
last day of Christmas vacation, isn't it? (Let them answer.) Did
you have a good vacation? (Let them answer.) I brought a gift
that I received on Christmas morning. It will help me tell you a
story. (Show the gift.) Now that Christmas and New Year's is
over, do you feel a bit sad that everything is going back to
normal? (Let them answer.)
This morning I want to tell you about two boys about your age who felt this way. As you listen, imagine that you are one of these two friends. Both boys had a great Christmas vacation. One of the boys traveled to his grandparents to celebrate Christmas. When he returned, he couldn't wait to show his friend all the presents he received. One of the gifts was a sled. Since it had snowed a lot during vacation, the two boys spent much of their time sledding. Prior to Christmas both boys had helped their parents decorate their houses for Christmas. They each had plenty of Christmas cookies to eat. They both had so much that the only cookies not eaten were the broken ones and the ones with very little icing.
One of the boys was very sad that the holidays were over. He told his friend about his feelings. Do you know what his friend replied? His friend said, "I know when Christmas is over that it is difficult to start thinking about school and missing all the fun from vacation. When I feel sad I count my blessings!" Blessings are things that you are thankful for. So the two boys started to count their blessings. Here are some of the blessings on their list: their family, their home, their pets, their church, their friends, all the fun they had at Christmas, all the gifts they received and gave at Christmas and the list went on and on (you may add things to the list). There is one other important blessing each boy had. It is God's love.
As you get ready to go back to school this week, and as you begin to put Christmas things away, remember to count your blessings. Those are all the things you are thankful for. When you count these things, remember to include God's love.
