Cross Stitch
Children's Activity
Teachers: This week's text includes verse 16, which often
appears in cross stitch wall hangings.
The NRSV is: For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. John 3:16
Depending on the age of your class, students could create their own "drawn" cross stitch wall hanging of the verse. The very young could write and draw "God (draw a heart) the world."
Before class write the verse on your chalkboard or bulletin board. Students will see it when they arrive. Show an example of a cross stitch piece. Check your library for examples of cross-stitch pictures to show. See if there are adults in your congregation who could show their own examples to the class. Suggest that your students create cross-stitch of their own, using the verse or a portion of it. They may use an 81/2 by 11 sheet of white paper. Students may write the verse (or a portion of it) in the center and create decorations around the edges.
