Customs that make us wise
Children's sermon
Object:
a large calendar with the names of the days
Merry Christmas four days later! Nothing stands still. All of the waiting we did for Christmas is now over, and we are planning for other things like New Year's Day. I thought that I would bring along my favorite calendar and share something with you. (hold up the calendar)
How many of you can read or know your numbers? (let them answer, then point to the first day of December) What number is this? (let them answer) Very good, it is the number 1. And what day is it? (let them answer) That's right; it is Sunday. What is the next day? (let them answer) You are right, again. It is Monday and the day is number 2. After that comes Tuesday and the number is 3, and then Wednesday and the number is 4, and so on. Every week has a Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. And every day has a number beginning with 1 and followed by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and so forth. And every month is the same. It has days and numbers. It is always in the same order. We might say that the calendar follows the same custom every day, every week, and every month.
The reason that I am showing you this is because Mary and Joseph also followed their customs. When it was the right day, Mary and Joseph took Jesus to the temple for a religious service. Mary and Joseph's friends did the same thing. When it was the right day to take their baby to the temple, they did so, just like Mary and Joseph did with Jesus.
The Bible teaches us the right customs. One of the customs is to worship God every Sunday. Not just certain Sundays like Easter or special days like Christmas but every Sunday. The Bible says that Jesus became strong, filled with wisdom, and the favor of God was upon him. The parents of Jesus knew the customs and they brought Jesus to the temple when he was a child. Jesus took himself there when he grew older because he knew it was a good custom commanded by God.
The next time you look at a calendar you will see that it looks a lot like mine. It will have numbers and days and they will always follow each other in a custom-like way. When you see the calendar and it has a Sunday, you will remember that God expects you to be in church for worship, just like his own son Jesus was in church according to the custom of his people.
