A daughter/son of God
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: John the Baptist was a strange
character as he prepared the way for the Messiah. In his
popularity he could have made claims for himself that he refused.
He was always secondary to Jesus. As he said, "I am not worthy to
untie the thong of his sandal" (John 1:27).
*Do a study of John the Baptist. As a class or family, look up all the references to John the Baptist by consulting a Bible concordance.
*Read the story of John the Baptist from a Children's Bible.
*As a family or class, draw a picture of John preparing the way for Jesus. *Explore everyone's various roles. We have names, but we also have roles. Some of us are sons and others are daughters. Some are neighbors, friends, church members, classmates, and so forth. List as many roles as you can. Be sure and include the role "daughter/son of God."
*Rank the roles in terms of their importance.
*Note that John the Baptist's role was as one who prepares the way for Jesus. Does anyone in your church do that? List them.
*If you haven't started an Advent countdown calendar, it's still not too late.
*By this time Christmas is in the air. Resist it and relish the Advent preparations. Preparation (anticipation) can often bring more joy than the arrival. Help your children learn that lesson as well.
Sunday school assembly opening:
*Sing "On Jordan's Banks The Baptist's Cry," "Prepare The Royal Highway," or other Advent hymns relating to John the Baptist. If the melody is too difficult, share the verses and explain them to the children.
*Light the third Advent candle.
