Children's sermon
Object:
a bow tie
And he said to him, "Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding robe?" And he was speechless. (v. 12)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) Today we're going to talk about clothes. How many of you have gone somewhere that you had to wear special clothes for? (allow answers) What kinds of things did you have to wear? (allow answers)
Some things require certain clothes or equipment. For example, what do you need if you want to play outside in the snow? (allow answers) There are a lot of special clothes we wear in the snow: boots, coats, snowpants, hats. If you are serious about building a snowman or having a snowball fight, you make sure that you are wearing all of the right clothes. If you try to build a snowman but don't have your gloves, no one would believe that you really wanted to build a snowman. What if you went to a wedding in a tuxedo but instead of wearing a bow tie, you wore a winter scarf? Would people think you really wanted to be at that wedding? (allow answers) Probably not. In fact, people in the wedding might be offended that you weren't taking their special day seriously! You might get kicked out of the wedding for not dressing appropriately.
In fact, our gospel lesson today is about someone who got kicked out of a wedding for not dressing appropriately. In the gospel, Jesus tells the story of a king who invited many people to his son's wedding. When the king went in to the party, he saw a guest who was not wearing wedding clothes. The king had the man thrown out of the party, away from the lights of the celebration, so that the man was alone in the darkness. The man was not wearing the right clothes; to the king, the man's clothing sent the message that he didn't really want to be at the wedding. His clothing said he wasn't really happy for the king's son.
This is an important lesson for us but not because it's about clothing. In some ways, we are the man in the wrong clothes and God is the king. When we come to worship God -- when we come to the "wedding feast" -- we should prepare our hearts and minds. We should wear the clothing of the spirit. What do you think that means? (allow answers) The clothing of the spirit is not about the clothes we wear on the outside. The clothing of the spirit is about the way we clear our minds of outside thoughts and clear our hearts of any bad feelings when we come to worship God. If we want to show God that we are serious about worship, we need to clothe our hearts correctly, from the big things down to the little things -- from the tuxedo down to the bow tie. Amen.
