A different kind of king
Children's sermon
Object:
a thorn vine made into a crown
Good morning, boys and girls. Tell me what kind of crown a king wears. (Let them answer.) A king doesn't wear a crown like this one, does he? (Show your crown of thorns and let them answer.) I want to tell you a story this morning about a different kind of king. This king lived in a land very far away from us. As I tell you the story, see if you can guess who this king was.
Once upon a time there was a kingdom where many people lived. The king of the land was very kind. He loved all the people who lived in his kingdom. He did many good things for his people. He was very different from other kings. This king acted as a servant to his people, rather than a ruler who wore expensive clothes and lived in a big castle. He taught his people many things about taking care of other people. He taught his people to share with others, too. As time went on in this kingdom, some people became jealous of the loving servant king. They were worried that they were going to lose the power that they had. So, the jealous people got together. They plotted how they could kill the king. When they did, all the king's friends became afraid and hid. The jealous people planned to kill the king. Before they did, they put a crown on his head like this one. (Show the crown.) It is a crown of thorns. They did this to make fun of the king, because you and I know that kings don't wear crowns like this. Finally they killed the king by hanging him on a cross to die.
How many of you know the name of the king that I am talking about? (Let them answer.) Jesus is the king I'm talking about. This is the story that happened to Jesus. This morning it sounds like the story has a sad ending. If you come back next Sunday I'll tell you the real ending of the story. I'll have a surprise, because you'll discover the story has a happy ending. I want you to remember this week that Jesus was a different kind of king. He was a servant king. He loved us so much that he suffered for us by wearing a crown of thorns.
