Do you believe?
Children's sermon
Object:
a Bible
Good morning, boys and girls. Today we are going to do something special. I am going to ask you to come up, place your left hand on this Bible, raise your right hand, and say after me, "I promise to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help me God." This is an oath. After you take this oath I am going to ask you to testify. Testifying is telling exactly what you saw and heard. Do you understand? Are you ready to give your testimony? (let them answer) Good! Who wants to be first to testify? (let them volunteer)
We have a person who will now take the oath. (lead him/her in the oath taking) There are a couple of questions I want to ask you. What is your name and address? (let him/her answer) Do you live alone or with your mother and father? (let him/her answer) Do you believe almost everything you see with your eyes? (let him/her answer) If you heard of something you had never heard of before, like a cow jumping over the moon, would you believe it? (let him/her answer) If Jesus came to your house would you welcome him and ask him to have lunch with your whole family? (let him/her answer) Thank you very much, you are excused.
(speak to the next child) Please tell me your name and address. Do you live alone or with parents? (let him/her answer) Do you believe what you hear? (let him/her answer) If I told you that I love you as a Christian, would you believe me? (let him/her answer) If I told you that we were going to run a ten-mile race this afternoon and that I would pick you up on my motorcycle this afternoon, would you believe me? (let them answer) There are some things you believe when you hear them and some things you do not. Thank you very much, you are excused.
There is a reason why I asked you to give your testimony. As Christians we are asked to believe the testimony of the people who lived with, talked to, and walked with Jesus. They could tell the difference between true and untrue things. Like you, they would not believe a cow jumping over the moon if they heard it. They wouldn't believe it if I told them they were going to race for ten miles after I picked them up on my motorcycle.
But, the disciples did talk and walk with Jesus after he was raised from the dead. They even ate fish and bread with him. It seemed impossible, but they knew for sure that Jesus came back from the dead and they were willing to testify to that, and we are asked to believe their testimony.
Do you believe that Jesus was raised from the dead and lives in heaven with his Father? You do! I rest my case. We believe the Bible and all of the testimony that is written in the Bible. Amen.
