Do you have patience?
Children's sermon
Object:
A loaf of bread (and some grains of wheat, if you can
locate some)
Good morning, boys and girls. What am I holding? (Let them
answer.) That's right, a loaf of bread. Did any of you eat toast
for breakfast this morning? Or did any of you have wheat cereal?
(Let them answer.) Bread and (name a wheat cereal) are made from
wheat.
Let me ask you another question. Are any of you anxious to see what might be in some of your Christmas presents under your tree? (Let them answer.) You must have great patience to wait until Christmas when you may open them.
That's why I brought this loaf of bread this morning. I want to talk to you about waiting. You know that during Advent we must learn to wait to the coming of Jesus' birth. Our Bible story today is also about waiting. It tells us that we must be patient, and wait until the Lord comes. It tells us about how a farmer must wait for his crop to grow and be harvested.
Do you know how long we had to wait from the time this wheat was planted until it was grown and ready to use to make bread? (Let them answer.) If the farmer planted the seed in the spring, the wheat wouldn't be ready until the fall. What a long time to wait for a loaf of bread! But it is worth the wait for this good tasting bread. Is it worth the wait to open those presents under your tree? (Let them answer.) That's right, it is. There are so many things that we must be patient for. Farmers must have patience to wait for their crops to grow. We must have patience to wait for Christmas. The Bible tells us to be patient and stand firm because the Lord's coming is near. So, the next time you want something right away, stop and see if you can be patient. That's what God wants from all of us. (If you wish, share small bits of bread with the children as they go back to their parents.)
