Don't be misled
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: What is the primary doctrine of
Christianity? It is that we are saved as a gift of God by faith
in Jesus Christ. Still, it is a sad fact that many Christians
still think that they can get to Heaven as a result of their own
good works. We need to use every opportunity to instill in our
children a clear understanding that it is the saving work of
Jesus that saves us and not our own.
*Ask the children to answer the question, "Do you want to go
to Heaven and be with Jesus when your life is over?" Presumably,
they will all answer in the affirmative. (If not, you have a
serious problem.) Then display the following items, which need to
be prepared beforehand. They could be written on a board or easel
or you could prepare them on large cards:
1. Live a sinless life (commit few or no sins).
2. Come to church every Sunday.
3. Give most of my money to the church or to the poor.
4. Devote my life to full-time church work.
5. Go on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land.
Ask the children to prioritize this list as to which is the most
likely to get us into Heaven. After they have discussed this for
a while, add a final item to the list, "Believe in Jesus as my
Savior." Make sure that they see that the only thing on the list
that gets us into Heaven is believing in Jesus. You may want to
read and explain Ephesians 2:8-9 to them.
Sunday school assembly opening:
*Open with a hymn, such as "Rock Of Ages," that emphasizes
salvation as a gift of God.
