Don't sound a trumpet
Children's sermon
Object:
a long, hollow cardboard tube (from plastic wrap, paper towels, etc.)
Good evening, boys and girls. I brought an empty tube with me tonight. Do you ever play with these at home? (let them answer) What do you do with them? (let them answer) Some of you use them to look through like a spy glass of a pirate. (let one child demonstrate) Some of you play a trumpet with them. (let another child demonstrate) Those are two things I wanted to talk about tonight. Spyglasses and trumpets! Our verse tonight says something about both of them. Do you know any verses in the Bible that talk about spyglasses and trumpets? (let them answer) I didn't think so. Our verse tonight talks about giving alms. Do you know what alms are? (let them answer) "Alms" is a very old word that means gifts freely given to the poor. Some very rich people in Jesus' day actually hired a person to play a trumpet very loudly before they gave their gifts to the poor. The trumpet player would go right ahead of the rich person and play the trumpet like this: Dah Dah Dah DAH! (demonstrate) Then all the rest of the people would hear the trumpet and watch the rich person give his gift to the poor. The rich people didn't give their gifts because they really wanted to help the poor. They gave them so people would notice how important they were. Jesus said God sees what we do just like we can see things through our spyglass. (look through the tube)
Today is Ash Wednesday, when we remember another gift given to poor people very quietly without a trumpet. It was the gift of life given to us when Jesus was born. Jesus was born very quietly in a stable for all the poor people in the world. God sent angels to sing, but it was just for a few shepherds on a hillside. Today we remember what a great gift God gave without a trumpet -- the gift of grace. We remember that God loves us all enough to send us Jesus.
