Don't worry
Children's sermon
Object:
a note pad, a pencil, a worry jar, and a prayer jar
Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication
with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. (v. 6)
Good morning, boys and girls. Today is going to be a great day. The Bible says that we should rejoice in the Lord. Actually, Paul said that we should keep on rejoicing. Are your hearts filled with joy? Do you feel like a butterfly that could just fly around and touch only the flowers? That's the way you should feel. As a matter of fact, the Bible teaches us that we should have no worries. Do you ever worry? (let them answer)
Do you ever worry about your homework? Do you ever worry that you will have to eat something that you don't like to eat? Do you ever worry that someone will forget to pick you up? Do you ever worry that you might get lost in a store and not be able to find your mother?
Now do you remember some of your worries? Would you like to tell me what you worry about? (write down a few of their worries on separate sheets of the note pad) I used to worry about the same kinds of things.
But now I have the answer. I read in the Bible that we are not supposed to worry. It confuses our brain. So here is the answer. I have two jars. One is called the worry jar and the other is called the prayer jar. (show the jars) Let me show you how it works.
Do you remember the worry about having to eat something you don't like to eat? I have that worry written right down here. I am going to take this old worry and just drop it in the worry jar. I also wrote a prayer about my worry. It went something like this, "God, teach me to eat the things that make me strong and help me show my parents I am trying. Amen." I put this prayer in the prayer jar.
Do you remember the one about getting lost in a store? I have that worry right here and I am going to put it in the worry jar. But I also have a prayer for our jar. "God, remind me when I get tired to tell my mom or dad and ask them if we can take a short break from shopping pretty soon." I am going to put this in the prayer jar. (do one with the worries that the children told you about)
Now, which jar do you want to keep, the worry jar or the prayer jar? I want the prayer jar. Get rid of the worry jar. God teaches us to trust in him and give him our worries. God will take care of you.
The next time you think you should worry about something, say a prayer to God and ask for the help of Jesus. You will be much happier and you can be like Paul and many other Christians. You can rejoice, rejoice, and rejoice. Amen.
