Dwelling
Children's sermon
Object:
a visible birthmark, a wedding ring
If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who
raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his
Spirit that dwells in you. (v. 11)
Good morning, boys and girls. I have a birthmark that you can see. (show the birthmark) I have a little hole by my ear. I was born with it and it will dwell with me all of my life. I also have a wedding ring that I wear that I have worn since I was married a number of years ago. (show the wedding ring) The wedding ring dwells with me.
Do have something like a birthmark or a ring that you have had all of your life? If you do, you can say that it dwells with you. Do you like the word "dwell"? (let them answer) I like the word. It is a smooth word and it is easy to say when you learn the word. If something dwells with you it means that it stays with you and is there all of the time.
Paul talked about dwelling a lot in the lesson today. He said that the Spirit of God dwells inside of us. The Spirit lives with us and is with us always. As Christians we want the Spirit to dwell with us. It is powerful and keeps us close to God and it protects us.
I think it is really special to know that inside of me there is the Spirit of God. The Spirit teaches me the best way to live and to make good friends. The Spirit teaches me to worship God. The Spirit of God teaches me to pray so that I can have a talk with God. The Spirit also teaches me to listen very carefully so that I can hear the voice of God. The Spirit of God teaches me to read the Bible so that I understand the words that are written.
The Spirit takes each one of us on an adventure that makes our life fun and holy. That's what the Spirit does.
So, if you have a little or big birthmark that has always dwelt with you or you have something else that never leaves you, then you know what dwelling is all about. Just remember what that is and you will also notice that the Spirit of God is always with you. Amen.
