Eager to do good
Children's sermon

Hi there, boys and girls! How many of you have rules that you have to follow at home? (show of hands) What are some of the rules you have? (let them tell you) What about at school? Do you have rules there? What are they? (let them tell you)
Why should we even have rules? (see what they think) I think we have rules because it makes it easier for us to be together. If we are all kind to each other, we will all be happier. If there are rules, then maybe people will fight less.
Do you follow your rules? (listen) What happens to you if you break one of your rules? (let them tell you) Now I have a harder question. Has anyone ever gotten in trouble for doing the RIGHT thing? (give this a moment) It is possible for us to get in trouble for doing something that we think is right. It's hard when that happens. That kind of thing happened to Jesus all the time. He would do something that was right in God's eyes but the people didn't agree. Eventually they punished Jesus. They killed him.
A man named Peter wrote today's lesson. Peter tells us that if we follow Jesus we might get in trouble for doing good things too. Some people might not like what we say or do. Peter says that that's okay, though. The first part of verse 14 says, "Even if you do suffer for doing what is right, you are blessed." It is always right to do what is right in God's eyes.
How will you know what is right? Talk to him. Listen to him. Eventually you will start to know the right things to do and say. If you are living the way God wants, you will always be blessed -- even if other people don't understand you.
Prayer: Dear God, help us be the people you ask us to be. Help us do the right things and listen carefully to you. Amen.
