Eagerly awaiting
Children's sermon
Object:
a bag of unpopped microwave popcorn
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you like popcorn?
(Let them answer.) I like it too. One problem I have with it is
that I lack the patience to wait for it to pop. Do any of you
feel the same way? (Let them answer.) I want to tell you a story
about a little boy about your age who loved popcorn. Unlike me,
he had a lot of patience. One morning before the boy went to
school his mother told him he could bring a friend home from
school and they could have a popcorn snack. He was very excited.
He and his friend waited eagerly and patiently all during school.
It seemed like that was the longest school day of the year. When
school was over, the boy's mother picked the two boys up. Then
they went to the grocery story to get the popcorn. The boys
waited patiently in the grocery line. Then they got in the car
and went home. It seemed as if every stop light they came to was
red. They waited patiently again. Then they came to a train
track. The red flashers started to blink. A train was approaching
the crossing. They waited patiently again. Finally they arrived
at the boy's home. They ran to the microwave. One more time, they
waited patiently as the corn popped. It finally popped and their
snack was ready. It was what they waited patiently for all day.
It was worth the wait. Their popcorn and the good time they
looked forward to finally arrived.
This story is like this morning's Bible story. The Bible says that we wait for the revealing of Jesus. This is the first Sunday in the season we call Advent. In Advent we must learn to wait patiently for Jesus to come. There are times during Advent that we wonder if Jesus will ever come. The Bible story tells us that while we are waiting, God is blessing us. It tells us that when we are faithful and wait, we can trust God. While we are faithful and wait, Jesus will not forget us. Jesus will keep us going until the very end. I want you to remember during Advent that we must learn to wait for Jesus. Just as we wait for popcorn to pop, we always wait for Jesus to come. While we wait for Jesus, God is blessing us.
