An early valentine
Children's sermon
Object:
a valentine addressed to God
Good morning, boys and girls. I want to show you a valentine
that I brought with me this morning. (Show the valentine.) I know
that it's not time for Valentine's Day, so let's consider this as
an early valentine card. Who do you send valentine's to? (Let
them answer.) You send them to people who you love. This one is
addressed to God. This morning's verse tells us that "anyone who
loves God is known by him." That's a nice Bible verse to
remember. Can you repeat it with me? (Repeat it again and help
the students to say it.)
I want to tell you about a little boy about your age. As you listen to my story see if you can tell whether the little boy loved God. Once there was a little boy. He was very friendly to other persons. He attended church and Sunday school. He even came down to the front of church for children's stories, like ours this morning. When someone in his family was sick, he would draw them a pretty picture to make them feel better. Sometimes when a friend was sick, his parents would help him mail a get well card to his friend. When he played with his friends, he always tried to share his toys. He was the kind of boy who made a good friend.
Even though he did these things there was one thing he couldn't understand. He tried to do the things that he thought God would want him to do. But he never knew if God knew that he was trying to do the right thing. Have any of you ever had that problem? Do you want to do what God wants you to do, but you never knew if God sees you do it? (Let them answer.) One morning in Sunday school, his teacher asked his class to memorize this verse: "Anyone who loves God is known by him." That means that if you love God, God sees your love. If you love God and do what God wants you to do, God knows you.
When the boy heard these words, he learned the answer to his question. The question is: "Does God know that you are doing good things?" The answer is: "Yes!" Now, tell me, did God know what the boy was doing? (Let them answer.) The answer is: "Yes." In the next few weeks as you get ready to send valentines, think about God. Remember that if you love God, you are known by him.
