Every Sunday is special
Children's sermon
Object:
an Easter egg, cracked, dirty and on the verge of being
spoiled
Good morning! Last Sunday was a very special day for
Christians. What was it? (Let them answer.) Yes, it was Easter.
What is it that we celebrate on Easter? (Let them answer.) Of
course, we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus from the dead.
They killed him, but God raised him from the dead, and God
promises to raise all of us from the dead too, all of us who
believe in Jesus.
Now what do I have here? (Show the egg and let them answer.)
Yes, it's an Easter egg, but it's not a very good one, is it? The
shell is cracked, it's dirty, and it's probably not safe to eat
it because it's spoiled and might even give us food poisoning.
Last week, on Easter Sunday, this was a beautiful egg. The shell
wasn't cracked, and it was clean and good to eat.
Now, I am showing you this egg for a reason. This old Easter
egg shows us the way some people treat Easter. They come to
church on that day all dressed up just like this egg was. They
listen to the sermon and sing the Easter hymns, but then they
leave church and don't come back until some other special event.
Their faith is like this egg. It's cracked and old and dirty. It
no longer feeds them. Look around the church today. Do we have as
many people here today as we had last Sunday? (Let them answer.)
No, we don't and that's really a shame. Every Sunday is a day to
remember the resurrection. We should be in church every Sunday we
possibly can. Aren't you glad that you are here today? (Let them
answer.) Sure you are. Let's pray for those who are not here.
Dear Father in Heaven: We praise You and thank You for the
resurrection of Jesus and for the promise of our own
resurrection. We ask You to touch the hearts of all those who do
not come to church regularly and, by the power of Your Holy
Spirit, instill in them a stronger faith. Amen.
