Excel in your giving!
Children's sermon

packets of vegetable seeds (the illustration below uses
corn seeds)
Good morning! When the apostle Paul wrote to the
Corinthians, he wanted them to do a good job in their giving. He
said, "Excel also in this generous undertaking...." In other
words, "Do a good job!" Give as much as you can.
When I think of people giving generously, I also think of the natural world. Have you ever thought about how generous nature is? If I plant a seed of corn, when the fruit develops will I have yet another seed to plant? (Let them answer.) Yes! I would have not only enough seed so that the corn plant could grow yet another plant, I would have enough corn to grow a whole garden from just this one seed. Each ear of corn makes hundreds and hundreds of seeds. The corn plant is generous!
What do we do with the extra seeds the corn plant gives? (Let them answer.) We eat them! The plant gives us several ears of corn and each ear has many, many seeds so that we can eat the corn seeds and still have some left to plant in next year's garden.
God wants us to be generous in our giving as well. Like the corn plant that gives generously, so God's people give generously of their time and money so that God's garden can grow.
When people have needs, like when they don't have enough food or clothing, Christians join together to share what they have so that others can have enough. Christians give generously because God has been generous in blessing us.
Dear God: Teach us to be generous in our giving. Amen.
