Eyewitness testimony
Children's sermon
Object:
a newspaper story that mentions witnesses
Good morning! I brought this newspaper clipping with me
today. It tells about a court trial where a person is being tried
for breaking the law. I want to read this one part to you. (Read
the part that mentions witnesses or a witness.)
Now, this person is testifying in court that he actually saw
what happened. He saw it with his own eyes. That's why we call
him an eyewitness. When you see something happen and you are
absolutely sure that it did happen, you are an "eyewitness." Do
you think the judge and the jury are going to be impressed by
this kind of testimony? (Let them answer.) Yes, I think they will
be impressed, and unless there is some other evidence that shows
something different, they will believe the eyewitness.
Saint Peter, an apostle of Jesus, wrote a letter in which he
said that he and the other apostles were eyewitnesses of what
Jesus did. One event that he testifies to having seen as an
eyewitness was the transfiguration of Jesus on a mountain. Peter
was actually there when Moses and Elijah appeared and the voice
of God came from a cloud saying, "This is my Son, my Beloved,
with whom I am well pleased." Since Peter was an eyewitness to
all this, do you think we should believe him? (Let them answer.)
Yes, indeed, I think we should believe him. He is telling the
truth! Let's thank God for providing eyewitnesses like Peter.
Dear God: We thank You for providing so many eyewitnesses who
have told us the truth about our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Our faith is strengthened by their testimony. Amen.
