Facing the lion
Children's sermon
Object:
a picture of a lion
Good morning! Let's think about some things that might scare
us. What kinds of things can you name that are scary? (Let them
answer.) Those are all scary all right. Let me show you this
picture. What's in this picture? (Show the picture and let them
answer.) Yes, that's a lion. If you saw that lion in the zoo, he
wouldn't be very scary. But what if you met him on a dark night
and he hadn't eaten anything for a few days? Would that frighten
you? (Let them answer.)
The Bible tells us that the devil is just like a hungry lion
running around trying to find something to eat. In fact, he is a
lot worse than a lion because all the lion can do is kill you.
The devil can do far worse than that. He can take you to Hell and
keep you there forever! If a lion killed us, we would just go
right to Heaven and be with God forever. But if the devil gets
us, we will never see God and we will never be in Heaven. We sure
don't want that to happen, do we? (Let them answer.)
How do we fight this terrible devil that is trying to take
us away from everything that is good? (Let them answer.) We fight
him by calling on the name of the one who saved us by dying on
the cross. The one who has already beaten the devil once and for
all. Who is that? (Let them answer.) Yes, we call on Jesus, and
he will always hear us and protect us. When he speaks, the devil
runs away and hides. Aren't you glad we have Jesus on our side?
(Let them answer.)
Let's thank Jesus for protecting us from that mean old lion,
the devil.
Dear Friend, Jesus: Thank you so much for protecting us from the
devil. Help us to remember you when we face all kinds of
temptations that the devil puts in our life. We know you will
always be there when we call on you. Amen.
