Faith Grows Like Our Feet
Children's Activity
Object:
Parents or Teachers: The lesson today was the request of the disciples for
Jesus to increase their faith. The object was a baby shoe and an adult
shoe. They show that as feet grow and grow, so does our knowledge of God,
our feelings about our understanding of who God is and what God does in
our lives. As the activity begins, contact parents and have them bring
their child's footprint from their birth. Tiny feet are so similar in size
that you can make copies of one or two footprints for all the children, if
you do not have one from everyone. Have the children cut around the
footprint. Tell the parents that you will be doing an activity with paint
and to have the children dress appropriately. Cover an area on the floor
with newspapers or a drop cloth. Use washable poster paint and
experiment with the thickness of the paint. Each child will be removing
shoes and socks to make the print. Plastic dishpans are good for putting
the paint in. You need less than one-fourth inch of paint on the bottom of
the pan. Each child places the bottom of one foot either by stepping in the
dishpan or by painting it with a brush. Practice blotting the exercise first
to see how much paint you need for a good printed foot. Use a dishpan, a
soft bristled brush, soapy water and towels for cleanup. You may want
parental help for this activity. You may print next to the "now" size of the
foot on a piece of paper a caption reading "AS OUR FEET GROW, SO DOES
OUR FAITH."
When this project is completed talk about ideas about God and how we change as we get older. Ask the children for examples of how their own ideals have changed. Ask them to explain who God is. You may be surprised at their faith.
