Familiarity breeds contempt
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: There is a possibility that we can become so
familiar with Jesus and his teachings that we become complacent
about him and about Christianity in general. Just as the people
of his own hometown could not believe that this man who had grown
up among them could be someone very special, so we can also
become so familiar with all this "Jesus stuff" that we forget how
awesome it really is.
*Place a bunch of different colored sheets of paper on top
of a Bible. Tell the children that one of the papers in front of
them has the secret of eternal life written on it. Have them all
pick one to see if it is the one. When they all show that their
paper is blank, explain to them that the paper they should have
picked is a page of the Bible. Turn to John 3:16 or another
passage that tells us how we can live forever, and show them that
this is the secret paper. Of course, it really isn't a secret at
all, but we are all so familiar with it that we often don't
realize its importance.
Sunday school assembly opening:
*Put up several pictures of famous people and among them put
pictures of people who are leaders in your church. Ask the
children to identify as many of these people as they can. After
everyone is identified, talk with them about why these church
leaders are very important to them because of what they do.
