Familiarity breeds contempt
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: What Jesus has done for all of us is
wonderful and amazing, and yet we become so accustomed to it that
we can take it for granted so that we fail to appreciate how
awesome it is. Think about it: God, Himself, became a man, lived
among us, and died on the cross to pay for our sins. That is
truly awesome! Let's be sure that our children do not take Jesus
for granted.
*Show the children pictures of a lot of different people.
Include some famous people and the minister of your church. Ask
them to identify one of the people in the pictures who is a
"prophet." When they fail to do so, pick out the picture of the
minister and explain that in a biblical sense, a prophet is
someone who proclaims the word of God. Since the minister is
proclaiming the word of God, he is a prophet. Relate this to the
Gospel text where the people of Nazareth did not recognize Jesus
as a true prophet because they were so familiar with him.
*Bring an assortment of items that include a Bible, pill
containers, vials with liquid inside, several different kinds of
books, and anything else you want to add. Tell the children that
in one of the items before them there is a secret formula that
will allow them to live forever. Have them look over the items
and select the one that has the secret formula in it. If they do
select the Bible, have them explain how it has the formula for
everlasting life. If they do not, tell them why the Bible has
this formula and that it really isn't a secret at all.
Sunday school assembly opening:
*Read the Gospel account and ask them why they think the
people of his hometown rejected Jesus. Help them to see that it
is important not to dismiss someone just because we are familiar
with them.
