Famous Jesus
Children's sermon
Object:
make a poster of famous people from magazines or newspapers, people that children will recognize
Good morning, boys and girls. Do you know anyone famous? (let them answer) If someone is famous, we know them by just mentioning their name or seeing their picture on television or in the newspaper. Do we have any famous people in our church? (let them answer) Does anyone talk about you on television or is your name and picture in the newspaper? People have to work pretty hard to be famous.
I brought along some pictures of people that I think are famous. (bring out your poster of President Bush, Michael Jordan, a cartoon character like Sponge Bob, a movie star like Tom Cruise, and for fun a picture of someone in the congregation) Let's see if we can figure out who all of these people are. (let them identify each character) Very good, we know almost everyone including our very famous [member of the church]. Can you tell me what all of them do? (let them answer) Those are the things that made them famous.
Did you know that Jesus was famous? (let them answer) He was very famous. In our reading today, the Bible teaches us that as Jesus began to teach and perform miracles his fame spread all over Galilee. There were no newspapers, radio, or television, so it was a lot harder to be famous in the time that Jesus lived than it is today. How do you think people became famous without television, radio, or the newspaper? (let them answer) That's right; one person told another person what they had seen or heard. Then that person would tell someone else until almost everyone knew about Jesus.
On this day Jesus was teaching in church. He read from the scriptures and then he talked about what he read. The people were very impressed about the way Jesus spoke about God. They knew right away that Jesus was very close to God and that he was talking about a new kind of truth. Then he healed a man who had been very sick. When Jesus took the sickness right out of him, the people were amazed. Even sick spirits obeyed Jesus when he commanded them to depart from a person. When the service was over, the people gathered together and talked about Jesus. Then they went back to their villages and told others. Soon everyone was telling someone else when they traveled or when someone visited them. In a very short period of time, Jesus became a very famous man.
The next time you see someone on television or in the newspaper that you think is famous, you will remember the day in Capernaum when the people in church made Jesus famous.
