Father of many nations
Children's sermon
Object:
a dollar bill
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought a dollar bill this
morning, because it reminds me of this morning's lesson. Do any
of you know whose portrait is on the dollar bill? (Let them
answer.) That's right, George Washington is on the dollar bill.
Do any of you know what is so important about George Washington?
(Let them answer.) One thing is that we call him the "father of
our country." That's because he was our first president. He was
also a very important person at the time of the founding of the
United States.
What you may not know is that in addition to God and Jesus, Christians have another person who is very important to us. His name is Abraham. He is called the father of many nations. Christians also call Abraham the father of our faith. Hundreds of years ago, God made a promise to Abraham. The promise was based on Abraham's faith. God promised Abraham that all his descendants -- that means his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all the way to us -- would inherit the world. That means that God gave the world to us. But to receive it we must have faith in God. We must share our faith with all people. We must believe in God. We are in church today because Abraham believed in God. He passed the faith to us. Abraham gave the faith to many other people also. As those people had faith in God, the faith spread across the world. That is why God called Abraham the father of many nations. That is why we call Abraham the father of our faith.
The next time you see a dollar bill, I hope you remember George Washington. You may think of him as the father of our country. Think of Abraham as the father of our faith.
