Feel the wind blow
Children's sermon
Object:
some wind, created from hand fans or an electric fan that is situated in a place where it changes direction
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you have ever felt the wind? (let them answer) Sometimes the wind can be fun and it feels good, and sometimes the wind is hard and makes us afraid. Have you ever been in a big wind that blows so hard you can barely stand up? (let them answer)
Where does the wind come from? (let them answer) I brought along a fan with me today that I think makes wind. When I wave the fan, I can feel wind. Do you feel it? (let them answer) Let's take a look at the fan and see what the wind looks like. (examine the fan) Does anyone see the wind? Where is it in the fan? Does it go away when we look for it and then come back when we are not looking for it? (let them answer; then start fanning the children with your fan) Where is the wind now? (let them answer) Where is it going? Can anyone follow the wind? (let them answer)
Jesus said that the wind blows from where it chooses. You can hear it, he said, but you do not know where it came from or where it is going. He said that because the same is true of the Holy Spirit. Has anyone seen the Spirit of God? (let them answer) Does anyone know where the Spirit came from or where the Spirit is going? (let them answer) I don't think so.
God says that every one of us needs the Spirit within us. When the Spirit is within us and around us, we are in touch with God. When we are born, the Spirit is not in us. We are born with bones and skin, but we do not have the spirit. We have brains, we can think and smile and make sounds, but the Spirit is not in us. But then God sends his Spirit to us. We don't know where it came from and how it got here, but the Spirit is a gift that comes with God's word. God makes us his own children, just like our parents made us their children.
The next time you feel a beautiful wind blow on you I want you to look and see if you can tell where it came from or where it is going. I will be surprised if you can answer those questions. The same is true with the Spirit of God. At some time the Spirit entered your heart and made you a child of God, and we are very blessed because of it.
