Fill up with the Spirit
Children's sermon
Object:
a newspaper article about an accident caused by a drunk
driver
Good morning! I want to show you this newspaper article.
This is the kind of thing we read in the paper all too often.
This tells about somebody who was in a car accident because they
were drunk. (Show them the article.) Driving a car when you're
drunk is a very serious crime, and people are put in jail for
doing that. How do you think God feels about it? Do you think God
is happy with people who do that? (Let them answer.) No, of
course He isn't!
God has told us very clearly that it is sinful to get drunk.
Many places in the Bible we read that God doesn't want us to do
that. Paul wrote to the people at Ephesus telling them, "Do not
get drunk on wine ... but be filled with the Holy Spirit." Now we
know what he means when he says don't get drunk, but what does he
mean when he says we should be filled with the Holy Spirit? (Let
them answer.) He means that, instead of getting drunk on wine, we
should let God's Holy Spirit fill us up and make us feel
wonderful. Some people get drunk because they think it feels
good, but don't you think being filled with the Holy Spirit would
make you feel a lot better than any kind of alcohol that you
might drink? (Let them answer.) Of course it would, and we can be
filled with the Holy Spirit anytime at all by simply reading
God's word and praying that He will send His Holy Spirit into us.
Let's do that right now.
Dear Father in Heaven: Fill us with Your Holy Spirit so that we
can know how to be really happy as we realize all the blessings
You give to us. Amen.
