Finding what's right
Children's sermon
Object:
a child's chemistry set or some test tubes with colored water in them
Good morning, boys and girls. This morning we are going to talk about testing ourselves. How many of you enjoy taking tests? (let them answer) Not many of you are taking tests in school, but there are other kinds of tests. For instance, we test our honesty when we are tempted to tell a lie. Sometimes we don't want to tell the truth because we think it will get us in trouble. Let's say our mom tells us to wash our hands before we eat and we don't do it. Mom asks, "Did you wash your hands?" If we say no, what will she say? (let them answer) That's right, she will tell us to go and wash our hands. But if we say yes and then we come to the table and she notices that we did not wash our hands, then what will she say? (let them answer) That's right, she will not only tell you to go and wash your hands, but she will also be unhappy that you lied to her.
If you were a chemist, you would be testing things all of the time. (bring out the chemistry test tubes) Let's say you are trying to find a new medicine that tastes really good. In this test tube I have some very pretty red chemicals, but when I taste it, I find that it is really awful. I have to try again. Now I have some pretty blue medicine, but when I taste it the taste is very bitter. I must keep testing until I find just the right chemicals that are not only good medicine but also taste good. I just test and test and test until I get it right.
The Bible teaches us to test each other and the way we live. When we find out that lying is bad for us and for everyone else, then the Bible tells us to stop lying and always tell the truth. When we test our parents and find out that they love us and forgive us every time, then we know that these are good people and we should trust them always. The Bible wants us to test things that we don't know about. It also teaches us that when we find good things after the test, we should keep them, and when we find bad things after we test them, then we should get rid of them and never try them again.
If you were a chemist, you would want to find the right answers about chemistry. When you are a Christian, you want to find the right way to live that makes God happy and others happy with you.
