A firm Christian
Children's sermon
Object:
a pair of pliers and a piece of metal or something you can put a firm grip on
... if you hold firmly to the message that I proclaimed to you -- unless you have
come to believe in vain. (v. 2b)
Good morning, boys and girls. Today we are going to talk about a firm belief in God. A firm belief is a strong belief that is always there to guide us. How many of you know what firm means? (let them answer) Do you know the difference between a firm handshake and a not so-firm handshake? (demonstrate a firm handshake) Do you know the difference between a firm "Yes" and a firm "No"? (demonstrate the difference) None of us like maybes, do we? Maybes are not firm answers.
I brought along with me this morning a tool. How many of you know what kind of tool this is? (let them answer) That's right, it is a pair of pliers. Pliers will hold something very firmly, much more firmly than hands can hold. (demonstrate the pliers) If I want to hold onto something very firmly I will use pliers instead of my hands.
Saint Paul was writing to the people in Corinth and he suggested to them that they should hold firmly to their faith. How do we hold on firmly? (let them answer) To be firm means to be regular in your thanksgiving to God. For instance, you can say the Lord's Prayer every day. You can pray a prayer of thanksgiving every day before breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You can learn Psalm 23 and say it every night before you go to sleep. Being firm in your faith means coming to Sunday school every Sunday and being in church to worship your God on Sundays and other times when the congregation meets for worship. A firm Christian is one who loves other people, forgives other people, and shares with other people. Christians are kind and joyful.
Paul wanted the Christians in Corinth to be firm and to practice their faith every day and not just when they thought about it. Firm Christians love God and worship God every day. Other people may try to talk you out of coming to Sunday school and church. Some people will tell you that they don't know the Lord's Prayer, Psalm 23, and other scripture verses but they are wrong.
I have a young friend, who learns a new Bible verse every week and she not only memorizes it, she also shares it with others. She is a very firm Christian.
The next time you see someone with a pair of pliers, you will remember how firm he or she wants to hold onto something that is important. You will also remember that God loves firm Christians. Amen.
