"Follow the leader"
Children's sermon
Object:
play "follow the leader"
How many of you like to play games? (Let them answer.) So
do I! Playing games is fun! So -- how many of you have heard of
a game called "follow the leader"? (Let them answer.) That's a
fun game. Let's do it. I'll be the leader and you follow me.
(At this point you may lead the children all over the nave and
perhaps the chancel of the church building. While you are
leading them, tell them something like this: "Jesus is our
leader and we follow him, too. Jesus told us to love our
neighbors and so we do. Jesus told us to baptize and so we do.
Jesus told us to celebrate the Lord's Supper and so we do...."
When you get back to where you began, say:) Jesus told us many
things and since he is our leader, we do them. But there is
something Jesus did that is even more important than all the
things he said. Jesus actually rose from the dead after he had
died. Nobody else has been able to do something like that, but
Jesus did. Because Jesus rose from the dead, we know that we
shall "follow the leader" and also rise from the dead when we
die.
When a loved one dies, such as a great-grandparent or
someone very special to us, we know that we shall see them again
in heaven. That's a nice thing to know, isn't it? We don't
really know what heaven is like, but we know that it is a
wonderful place and that Jesus has gone on ahead of us to prepare
a place for us and for all who believe.
This is the best game of "follow the leader" I've ever
played, but I think that the game of following Jesus, our Leader,
is going to be even better. I'm so glad Jesus died and rose
again.
Dearest Jesus: Thank you for being our leader and for giving us
the promise of life in heaven. Amen.
