Follow me!
Children's sermon
Object:
a Bible
Good morning! In the Gospel reading today, we heard Jesus
say to Philip, "Follow me." Did Philip do that or did he say that
he was too busy with other things and couldn't do that? (Let them
answer.) Yes, he did just what Jesus told him to do; he followed
him.
Now I want to ask each of you this morning if that has
happened to you. Has Jesus come to you and asked you to follow
him? (Let them answer.) I think I can show you where he has asked
you to follow him. Let's open this Bible and look at a verse. Let
me read to you from Mark chapter 8. Jesus says, "If any want to
become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their
cross and follow me." Do any of you want to be followers of
Jesus? (Let them answer.) Well then, these words must be telling
us the same thing he told Philip. He is telling us also to follow
him. Do you want to be like Philip or do you have more important
things to do than follow Jesus? (Let them answer.)
What are some things we should do if we are to be followers
of Jesus? (Let them answer.) Yes, those are all things a follower
will do. Let me name some others. (Name some things they did not
mention.) If we try to do all these things, we will be his
followers.
Let's thank Jesus for calling us to be his followers.
Dear Jesus: Thank you for calling us to be your followers. We
know that your followers will not only be blessed here on earth,
but we will be with you forever in Heaven. Help us always to be
good followers. Amen.
