Freedom!
Children's sermon

flag that may be in your worship space)
When we think about freedom, we think of our country. We even
sing that our country is the "land of the free and the home of
the brave." What is freedom? (Let them answer.) If I get locked
in my room, I am not free am I? If I get quite ill and cannot
move around, then I am not free either. Perhaps I have to go
someplace where I don't want to go. Am I free? (Let them answer.)
Of course not! We say that our country is "free" because we can
do pretty much what we want to do. But there are some areas where
none of us is free. That area is in the area of sin. Sin keeps us
from doing what is right and it makes us do what is wrong. Sin is
like a dark prison. No one can ever be free so long as we sin.
Every one of us sins. That means that every one of us is not
free.
Jesus says that the truth makes us free. Jesus is the TRUTH that makes us free. Sin keeps us from being free, but Jesus forgives us of our sins. That makes us free. When we know Jesus, we know the TRUTH -- the TRUTH that makes us free!
Our country can be a free country, but nothing can set us free from the sin that is in every one of us -- except Jesus. I'm glad I know Jesus and I'm glad you do, too! I'm glad our sins can be forgiven and we can be free!
Dear Jesus: Thank you for giving us the truth and making us free. Amen.
