Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are
sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers
her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! (v. 34)
Good morning, boys and girls. Today we have a story that is difficult for us to understand. It goes like this: Jesus was in Jerusalem and was healing people and getting rid of people's worst fears. The people loved him and he returned their love with mighty miracles. Even the Pharisees were warmed by the presence of Jesus. As a matter of fact, when the Pharisees heard that King Herod was coming for Jesus they warned him to leave Jerusalem quickly. Jesus took their warning and left the great city. Jesus knew about the record of the bad king and how prophets were killed in the city of Jerusalem.
Jesus felt bad about leaving the people in the city. He wished that he could have taken all of the people and showered them with his love. He would surround them with good things and bring joy to all of their lives. But the people were not ready. Jesus talked about how a mother hen gathers all of her little chicks under her wings and makes them safe. I brought along a few chicks to show you how beautiful they are and how the mother hen loves them. (show the chicks) Can't you just see all of these chicks running to their mother when they are scared and how the mother hen covers them with her wings?
Jesus wanted to do this with the people of Jerusalem but the people were not willing to recognize Jesus as their Savior. They loved for him to heal and get rid of demons but they were not sure they wanted Jesus to be their leader. People do not always love greatness. It is like when you are in school and the same boy or girl always gets the best grades. Are other children a little jealous? How do you feel about the boy that always is the star player on every team in school? He is the best in baseball, the best in football, the best in basketball, and he is the fastest runner and the strongest in gym. Is he your favorite friend? You are glad when your team wins but it would be nice if someone else could be best once in a while.
The people were not ready to make Jesus their Savior. They loved it when he did good things but they were a little jealous of him. Jesus had to stop healing and leave the city before Herod grabbed him, hurt him, and killed him.
Today, we know that Jesus is the Savior. We would like for him to take us under his wings like a mother hen cares for her chicks. We want Jesus to heal us, forgive us, and love us every day of our lives. When Jesus was living among the people of this world, they were not sure they wanted him to be their leader. Some were jealous of him and others were afraid of the king. But now we know that Jesus is the great leader and the best protector in the world. Amen.
