The gift is free
Children's sermon
Object:
a tall glass of water
Close your eyes and imagine with me for a moment. Let's
pretend that you are lost in the desert. It is very hot; the sun
is beating down on you. You are tired from walking so much. Your
feet are sore, and you are very, very thirsty. All of a sudden
you see someone with a big canteen of water. You ask if you can
please have a drink, because you have been wandering in the
desert for a long time. What do you think the person says to you?
What if the person says, "Yes," but that it will cost you a lot
of money? What if it costs you more money than you have? What
would you do? This is a big problem. You need that water more
than anything, but you can't afford it. It costs too much. Now
open your eyes. How would that make you feel? (Responses.)
Now pretend that the person tells you to go ahead and take
all the water you want. (Show the glass of water.) "It's free! Go
ahead and drink all you need!" Now how do you feel? (Responses.)
You bet it feels great! It's a free gift to you, even though the
person could charge you a great deal of money.
God's love for us is just like a tall glass of water when
you are thirsty. His love heals us, refreshes us, and gives us
the strength to go on -- even when we are walking through the
hot, dusty times of our lives. During Easter we pay close
attention to the gift of Jesus in our lives. The gift of Jesus is
so enormous that we could never pay for it -- it would cost us
too much. The good news is that God never asks us to pay for his
gift. The gift is free, and there are no strings attached. All he
asks is that we enjoy the gift and try to share the gift with
others.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for all your many gifts to us.
It is amazing that your gifts are free! What a loving God you
are. Thank you for taking such good care of us. Amen.
