The gift of hope
Children's sermon
Object:
an invitation to a birthday party
Good morning! I have with me this morning a birthday party
invitation. Do you like birthday parties? (Let them answer.) I
love birthday parties! Do any of you have a birthday coming up?
(Let them answer.) What do you hope to do at your birthday? (Let
them answer.) Have any of you had a birthday recently? (Let them
answer.) Birthday parties are great fun!
Today I want to talk about a word I brought up that the apostle Paul mentioned a long time ago. The word is hope. Can any of you tell me what hope is? (Let them answer.) For a birthday to come I have hope. For one that is past I do not have hope. I might have had a great time and I may have wonderful memories, but I do not have hope. Hope is in the future.
Now hope is a wonderful gift from God. When I hope to have a wonderful birthday party, I am filled with happiness and joy. I can hope to have a great day. I can hope to do well in school.
We as Christians have a great hope. What is our great hope? (Let them answer.) We have the hope of heaven -- of being with God! We don't have heaven yet, but we have that hope -- and what a wonderful hope it is!
Hope is always something we look forward to in the future. It is not something we have now or had in the past -- it is something in the future. Our hope for heaven is a great gift from our heavenly Father. We don't live in heaven yet, but we look forward to that day when we shall be with God forever.
Of course, we have many, many small hopes all our lives long. I still hope to have fun at the birthday party and I hope you have a great birthday when it comes next. But most of all, I hope that each of us -- you and me -- have a wonderful hope to live with God in heaven forever.
Dear God: Thank you for the gift of hope so that we can look forward to the future with joy in our hearts. Amen.
