Giving cheerfully
Children's sermon
Object:
a simulated paycheck and a pair of scissors
Good morning! Every time we meet together for a church
service, we pass around the collection plate so people can give
some of their money to the work of the Lord. How much money
should people be giving to the Lord? (Let them answer.) The
answer is, "It depends." It depends on how much you have and how
you feel about giving it to God.
Let's pretend that this check is your paycheck. (Show the
check.) Now there are some things you have to pay in order to
live. You have to have a place to live, and that costs money, so
part of the paycheck goes for that. (Cut a part off the
paycheck.) You also have to eat, so some of the check has to go
for groceries. (Cut a part off the paycheck.) There are a lot of
other things that you really need and they all have to be paid
for. (Cut several more pieces off the check.) Now, from what is
left, how much should we give to God? (Let them answer.) Well, it
still depends. God wants you to give, but He wants you to do it
cheerfully. He doesn't want you to give because you feel like you
have to. If you love God and want to give the money gladly to
Him, then you give whatever part of your money you can feel good
about giving to Him.
Let's ask God to help us be cheerful givers.
Dear Father in Heaven: Please help us understand that all that we
have is really yours and that we should be happy to give some of
what You have given to us back to You. Amen.
