Glow in the dark
Children's sermon
Object:
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought a toy with me this
morning that does something special. (Hold it up.) Do any of you
know what this toy does? (Let them answer.) When I shine a
flashlight on it and take it to a dark room it glows in the dark.
How many of you have something like this? (Let them answer.) This
toy is like this morning's lesson. The lesson tells us that
before we knew Jesus we were in darkness. We were like this toy
before I shone my light on it. The Bible lesson also says that
when we came to know Jesus we were in the light. We became like
this toy after the light was shown on us.
The Bible tells us to be "children of the light." What do you think it means to be "children of the light?" (Let them answer.) It means that God wants us to be good. It means God wants us to do the right things. It means God wants us to be true. It also means he doesn't want us to do bad things. Do you know that God wants grown-ups to be children of the light also?
Let's see if we can make my toy a child of the light. Pretend with me that each of us is the toy before we knew God. Pretend that my flashlight is God. Let's shine God's light on us. (Select a child to turn the flashlight on the toy for a moment.) Now let's put the toy in the bag, since we can't turn out the lights. (Put the toy in the bag and pass it around so that each child may see the glow-in-the-dark toy.) That's what each of us is like when we become children of God. We shine with God's light. That's what we should all try to do this week. Be children of light.
