Today's comic section of the paper
Good morning! I love the comic section of the newspaper. Do you like the comics? Which ones are your favorites? (Give them a chance to respond. If there is a consensus of a favorite comic, turn to it in today's paper.)
Have you ever noticed how people "talk" in the comics? They talk with their words surrounded by a circle, oval or square and a funnel----shaped part that goes to the comic character. See what I mean? (Show them an example.)
In a way that makes the comic's words more permanent. They are written down. The words I speak or the words you speak are not written down, and as soon as we speak them, they are gone. But that is not so with comics. There is something else about comics that is not true for us. Most comic characters never get older. A favorite comic character of mine for many years has been Dennis the Menace. He's still the same age he was when I started reading the comic strip about the time I was his age! Another favorite of mine is Snoopy. I once had a dog named Snoopy -------- named after the comic strip character. But my dog died of old age. Snoopy is still around! Snoopy and his owner never get any older!
God's word is even more permanent than this! And God also never gets any older! In fact, God and God's word will last forever. As long as there have been comic characters, there will someday be a time when the comic characters won't be any more. But God and God's word lasts forever!
Jesus says that everything will change and disappear -------- except God and God's word. Someday this building will not be here any more, but God will be. Someday you will change and grow up and be different from who you are today, but not God. God is what we call "permanent."
So -------- while everything changes (even comic characters), God does not change! God is forever! We can trust God because God is older than anything or anyone, and God will outlast anything or anyone! Wow! What a God we have!
Dearest Lord God: You are forever. Help us always trust you. Amen.
