'God forever!'
Children's Activity
Teachers or Parents: This is a new year -------- a new church year, that is. The season changes and so does the atmosphere in our houses of worship.
*Teach your children the significance of the church year. Show them the altar paraments and ask the pastor or altar guild to explain the significance of the color change.
*Make an Advent wreath as a home or Sunday school project. Light the first candle today.
*Make an Advent countdown calendar. Inexpensive kits can be purchased or you can make your own. With each day (or Sunday) in the calendar, have a story. Ask the children to add to the story.
*Today's object lessons teach about all creation being God's and all creation changing and passing away. God alone remains permanent. Look for the word "permanent" in your home or classroom. You'll likely find them on markers and perhaps memorial plaques.
Parents: Make Advent a special time around the family table. Ask your local bookstore for an Advent devotional book for families.1
*Use an Advent wreath at your table.
*Read the Advent readings in a devotional setting at home.
*Change the Advent calendar at these devotional meetings.
Teachers: Use Advent devotions to begin your Sunday school class each of the four weeks of Advent. Try to maintain and emphasize Advent over Christmas. Most people confuse Advent as nothing but pre----Christmas festivities. Study the special Advent themes and emphasize them in your classroom.
Sunday School assembly opening:
*This is the opportunity the church has to teach children the hymns that adults learned in school. Learn the Christmas carols, but do not neglect the Advent season and its hymnody.
*Light the first candle of an Advent wreath.
