God lives in you
Children's sermon
Object:
a heart locket (or any locket) with a photo inside
Good morning, boys and girls. I want to ask you a question.
How many of you live in a house or an apartment? (Let them
answer.) Everyone does. I brought a locket to show you. It's in
the shape of a heart. There is something that lives inside my
locket, just like you live in a house or apartment. It is a
photograph. (Open the locket.) Here is the photograph that lives
in my locket. The person in the photo is important to me (name
the reason, for example, your spouse or child.)
This locket reminds me of this morning's lesson. In the lesson Paul is writing a letter to Christians. He is telling them important thing about God and Jesus. Paul says that because we are Christians, something lives in us -- everyone of us. What could live inside us? (Let them answer.) The answer is that the Spirit of God and the Spirit of Jesus lives in us. How could the Spirit of God live inside us? (Let them answer.) The Spirit lives in us when we decided that we want to live the way God wants us to live. Paul says when that happens we have peace and life. When that happens we no longer are concerned about selfish things.
Paul also says that if someone does not have the Spirit of Christ living in him, he does not belong to Christ. He will live without knowing God's love and peace. People who don't have the Spirit in them have their thoughts on things that are of the flesh. They think about selfish things -- things that only concern them. But our thoughts are on God's Spirit. Because of that, God's Spirit lives in our hearts. It lives in our hearts just like this photograph lives in my locket. God wants us to think about things that are good. When we do that we please God and God's Spirit lives in us. We have peace and life.
