God looks for you
Children's Activity
Object:
There are lots of stories in the Bible about being lost and found. In the story of the Prodigal Son we learn about a wayward, sinful son and a loving, forgiving, accepting father. In today's reading we read about a lost sheep and a shepherd who stops at nothing until he brings the sheep back home. We read about a lost coin and a woman who searches endlessly until she finds it. In the hymn "Amazing Grace" we sing, "I once was lost, but now am found." Being lost and found is a central theme in God's relationship with his people.
For this week's activity, have a family Bible study. Read together Psalm 23. Read it a couple of times. It's short and very clear about the kinds of things a loving shepherd does for his sheep. Talk about it and try to understand God's love. Here are a few questions to get you started:
The Lord is our shepherd, and we are his sheep. What kinds of things do shepherds do to take care of their sheep?
What could the "green pastures" be in our lives? What about the "still water"?
What is the "valley of the shadow of death"? Why shouldn't we fear it?
Who are our enemies? What does it mean for God to prepare a table for our enemies and us?
Why would a sheep ever get lost? Why would the shepherd go looking for it?
Why do you think the shepherd loves his sheep so much?
