God in love
Children's sermon
Object:
a photo of friends
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you have any
friends? (Let them answer.) Do you like to play with your
friends? (Let them answer.) I have a photograph I want to show
you. (Show the photo and explain what's going on in it.) Friends
are very important people. Friends are people you love to be
with. Jesus told his disciples to love one another as Jesus loved
them.
I want to tell you a story about a group of friends about your age. As I tell the story see if these are things that you do with your friends. The group of friends really enjoyed being together. When one had a birthday, they always had a party. When one learned to roller skate, they all learned. When one friend was sick, the other friends made a get well card for the sick friend. When one friend went on vacation, that friend would always bring something special back to the other friends. When one friend received a new toy, that friend would share it with the others. All the friends would then get together and play. These friends even had a soft drink stand one summer afternoon. Does this group of friends sound like any of your friends? (Let them answer.)
Jesus told us that if we are his friends we should do what he tells us to do. He told us that there is one thing he wants us to do more than anything else. It is that we love one another, just as he loved us. When you have friends, and when you do fun things together, you are doing what Jesus asked. You are loving one another. The next time you are having fun with your friends, remember what Jesus said. He said to love one another as he loved you. This is Jesus' commandment to us.
