A director's baton
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought a director's baton with me today. Directors use this baton to make it easier for singers or people who play instruments to see what they want the musicians to do. How many of you like to sing? (Let them respond.) Lots of people like to sing. When you sing all by yourself you can sing anything you want to. What would happen if you all started singing anything you wanted to? (Let them respond.) It wouldn't sound very pretty because you wouldn't be working together. You would be doing your own thing and so would the person next to you. Let's try it. What's your favorite song? (Let them all try to answer.) You all have different songs that are your favorites. Now when I bring the baton down like this (demonstrate) I want you each to sing your favorite song. Ready? (Direct them with the baton.) Sing! (Encourage the shy ones to sing out.) Stop! Oh, my ears! Was that a lovely choir? (Let them respond.) No, of course it wasn't because we were all doing something different.
Our choir doesn't sound like that. What is different about our choir? (Let them respond.) Each of the members sings the same song. They work together to create harmony. They listen to the director, they follow the director's baton and they make beautiful music to praise God at our worship service.
Our lesson today is about another director. This director also wants us to work together. This director is God. God wants us all to work together in many ways. We sing together. We pray together. We worship together. We tell the stories of God to each other and to other people, too. But we don't each do whatever we want. We listen to the director and what the director wants us to do. God doesn't have a director's baton like this one. God sent Jesus to be like a director's baton. Jesus showed us the way to live and the way to love. Jesus gives us God's directions. When we listen to those directions we can all work together for God, the director.
