some pictures of very old relatives who have died
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you know your grandfather and grandmother? (let them answer) How many of you know your mother's or father's grandmother? (let them answer) Is there anyone here who knows your grandparents' grandmother or grandfather? They would be over a hundred years old! (let them answer)
Not many of us know our great-grandparents but we may have some pictures of them. (show your pictures) These pictures are of my great-grandparents. They would be about ________ years old if they were living today, but they died many years ago. I think they would like to be with me and my family but very few people ever live that long.
As we grow up, we hope that our parents will never leave us. We want them to live forever, but they don't. That is the way it works in this world. No one lives forever, no matter how healthy you are or how many vitamins you take.
I said that no one lives forever, but that is not exactly correct. In our Bible reading today, Jesus promised us that he would send a helper who will live forever and be with you for your entire life. That same helper came after Jesus returned to heaven and stayed with people like Peter and Mary. He was there with Paul and Stephen and everyone else, even with my great-grandparents. The helper God sent continues with us every day.
This helper came from God, and we say the helper's name every Sunday. Does anyone know the helper's name? (let them answer)
The helper's name is the Holy Spirit. God sent the Holy Spirit to be with each one of us so that we would always feel the presence of God in our lives. The Holy Spirit gives us faith to believe that God loves us. The Holy Spirit gives us courage and teaches us to share and forgive our enemies. The Holy Spirit is God's great gift to everyone in the world who believes in God.
I wish I had met my great, great grandfather and grandmother. I know their names but I never met them. I know where they lived but I never saw them. I don't even know any real stories about them. But the Holy Spirit is really special because not only has the Holy Spirit been in the world since God sent him, but the Holy Spirit is with us everyday.
So, the next time you see a picture of someone really old whom you have never met, remember that Jesus wanted someone to always be with everyone who ever lived. God sent the great helper, the Holy Spirit, to live with us forever.
