God is there
Children's sermon
Object:
folded slips of paper bearing the word GOD or a cross (folded so
children can't read them)
For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them. (v.
20)
Good morning, boys and girls! I have a job for you this morning. Are you ready? (allow answers) Good! Your job is to sit in little groups. I want some of you to sit ... (Point out four or five places that are separate, but not too far apart. Groups should be small, between two and four children. You may need to tell them where to sit.) there. Now, can you tell me who is in your group? (allow answers) Good. But you're forgetting somebody! There's somebody else in your group that you haven't named. Who did you forget? (allow answers) I have a clue for you. Stay in your groups and don't open this clue until everybody has a paper. (pass out folded slips of paper) Ready? Open your papers. What does the clue say? (allow answers) It says GOD! [Or, "That's a picture of a cross. Who does that cross remind us of? (allow answers) Yes -- Jesus!"] God is in your group! Everybody say, "Hi" to God. Did you know he was there? Did it surprise you? (allow answers)
Come back to the middle with me. Today's verse says that "Where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them." That means no matter how little your group was, God was there. Now, if I had told your groups to go stand at the grocery store, do you think God would still be there? (allow answers) Yes, he would! What if I told your group to go stand at the school? Would he still be there then? Is there anywhere I could send you where God wouldn't be with you? (allow answers) No! God is with you everywhere! No matter where you are, God says that if even two people gather in his name, he will be there with them. You don't even have to be in a church! Have you heard people call the church "God's house"? Well, it is God's house, but we can find God in places other than his house. Are you always at your house? (allow answers) Sometimes you go to school, don't you? And sometimes you're at the park or at the grocery store or at your friend's house. That's how God is: He is in his house, but he is also in all those other places.
Isn't that good to know? Wherever you are, you can count on God to be right there beside you. You could be doing your homework or walking the dog or even taking out the trash, and God is with you. What else could you be doing? (allow answers)
Let's have a quick prayer: God, thank you for being with me everywhere I go. I know I can count on you! Amen.
