God's biggest job
Children's sermon
Object:
a piece of chalk, a bottle of pills, a musical instrument, and a bucket of paint
Jesus answered them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent." (v. 29)
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you know what you want to be when you grow up? (let them answer) Do a lot of people ask you that question? (let them answer) It is something we have to think about as we grow up, get older, graduate from high school or college, and look for a job. Some day you will go to work just like your father and mother go to work.
I brought along some different things to see if you can guess what kind work some people do. I brought a piece of chalk, a bottle of pills, a musical instrument, and a bucket of paint. Who uses a piece of chalk? (let them answer) That's right, a teacher. They use a lot of chalk. What about this bottle of pills? (let them answer) A doctor may give you a prescription for these pills and a pharmacist will fill the bottle with the pills to make you well. How about this musical instrument? (let them answer) Very good, it could be a music teacher or it could be someone that plays in a great orchestra. And finally, who works with paint? (let them answer) A house painter uses a lot of buckets of paint to make a house look like brand new. The painter must be able to climb a tall ladder and not be afraid. These are the kind of jobs people do.
But what kind of work does God do? What do you think is God's biggest job? (let them answer) Do you think he checks the sun every day to make sure it is warm and bright? Does God teach the angels in the morning and answer prayers in the afternoon? (let them answer)
Some people traveled to a town called Capernaum to find Jesus and ask him this question, "What must we do to perform the works of God?" They thought they were asking the right person because they had seen Jesus do a lot of things that only God could do. They thought, maybe Jesus would tell them the secrets so that they could also do them. They wanted to work side-by-side with God and live where God lived.
Jesus gave the people an interesting answer. He told the people that God's biggest job was to make people believe in Jesus whom God had sent into the world. God does answer prayers and God does keep the world running but his biggest job is to help each one of us say, "I believe that Jesus is my Savior and Jesus will lead me to a full life with our Father God."
The next time you are sitting around and wondering what God's biggest job is, you can say, "Me. I am God's biggest job because he teaches me in many ways to believe in Jesus." Amen.
