God's building
Children's sermon
Object:
A brick
Where are we now? (Let them answer. You hope they will say,
"We are in the church.") So often we call this building "the
church" but that is not quite true. This building is a place
where "the church" meets. You and I and all the people sitting
here are the church. The place where we meet often is called "the
church building."
Would you call this brick "the church"? (Let them answer.) Of course not! This brick is just a brick. If it is put with many others together into a building, it might be a church building.
You are the church and I am the church and we are the church together. We are not the church by ourselves. We are the church when we gather with others and believe in Jesus. This brick is just a brick -- until it joins with many bricks and becomes a church building. You are a Christian -- until you join with others and become the church.
The apostle Paul says that the church -- the people of God -- are "God's building." You are an important part of God's building -- the church. Think of it -- you are a brick in God's house!
Dear Lord: Thank you for making each of us an important part of the church. And thank you for this church building where we can come together for prayer, singing, and enjoying each other. Amen.
