God's gift of grace
Children's sermon

a box wrapped with gift wrapping paper and a ribbon
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought something with me this
morning to help explain today's lesson. (Show the gift.) First, I
have a question for each of you. When do you receive gifts? (Let
them answer.) You receive gifts on special days. These could be
on your birthday, at Christmas and other special times in your
life. You receive gifts on special days, but not every day of the
year, right? (Let them answer.) What would you think if I told
you that God has a gift for us every day of your life? That's
what our lesson tells us this morning. God's gift doesn't come
wrapped up in a box, however. In fact, God's gift isn't something
that you can hold, like this box. What do you suppose God's gift
is? (Let them answer.) God's gift to Christians is God's love and
God's grace. The gift comes to us every day. All we have to do to
receive it is to have faith and to believe in God. You might
wonder, how can I have faith and believe in God? One of the
answers is that you are in church this morning. In church and
Sunday school you learn about God and about God's love for us. As
you learn about God, you soon begin to believe and have faith.
What do you suppose happens when you have a bad day? That's a day when things aren't going right. It's a day when you might have had an argument with someone at home. Do you think on a day like that God still gives you the free gift? (Let them answer.) The answer is: "Yes!" That's another great thing about God's gift. God's gift of love and grace comes to all believers, whether you are having a good day or a bad one. God loves all believers. Remember this week that each day you receive a gift from God because you believe in God. The gift is God's love.
